Most of my Provo work starts in a basement. Half-finished, framed but not rocked, or already drywalled with a blank wall the family has been staring at for two years. That's the room that becomes a theater.

Why it matters in Provo
Provo homes are built for this. A lot of the housing stock east of University Ave and up in the foothills, plus the newer construction out toward the Lakeview and Sunset areas, comes with big unfinished basements. Cool year-round, no windows to fight for light control, and enough square footage to give you real theater seating instead of a couch shoved against a wall. When it's 98 degrees in July or dumping snow off Provo Canyon in January, the basement is the room the whole family ends up in anyway.
The other reason: getting to a real theater is a hassle here. Between BYU game-day traffic, the constant I-15 construction through Utah County, and a drive up to a good cinema, a lot of families would rather the theater came to them. Big households are the norm in Provo, so a room that seats seven or eight actually gets used. That's the ideal time. With open studs I can run every wire — speakers, projector, HDMI, power for the screen — in about a day, before anything gets closed up. Wait until after drywall and I'm fishing lines and cutting patches, which adds cost and mess. Call me before the rock goes up and coordinate it with your finisher.
Projector or a big TV for a Provo basement theater?
Depends on the room. Most finished Provo basements have 7.5 to 8-foot ceilings and low ambient light, which is good for a projector — you can get a 110 to 120-inch image for real theater scale. If the space doubles as a bright family room, a large TV holds up better with the lights on. I look at the room's dimensions and light before recommending either.
